It depreciates every time that gas pedal is pressed.

Step 1: buy it at a dealer at a high enough altitude and drive it down the hill
Step 2: ...
Step 3: Profit!

Focus RS looks like it is as well and probably will be for quite some time. BMW M135i comes to mind as well.

We’ll how limited the production is. Maybe it’ll change. I’ve been surprised, though at how well Focus ST prices seem to have done - there are decent discounts on new ones, but the used values seem to have stayed pretty high. I just saw one with over 80,000 miles asking $16k. I would have thought they would come down pretty quick just due to the Ford badge, but that doesn’t seem to be happening.

I thnk the RS will hold value better than the ST. As awesome as the ST is, it still doesn’t quiet match the WRX and its AWD and thats probably why they dont hold value as well as the WRX. The RS seems like it will be pretty limited. The onbly thing that could hurt that is if they decided to do away with the ST and go more with the RS

I’m watching ST prices as a potential BRZ replacement next year. I like my BRZ, but I bought it when I was living the single life. Now I’m married, have two stepsons, a house, and all that adulting crap. I’ll see how prices are doing next year once the RS has been out for a while. Other possibilities include the GTI and WRX.

It’s a “Go” pedal. Always has been, always will be.

I test drove all three of these. (Then I bought a CPO Forester because I realized I didn’t really have the money.) The FoST is easily the least family-friendly and least-practical of the three. The rear seat in the FoST was basically useless when I had the driver’s seat set for my 6'2" frame, while there was still plenty of space behind me in the GTI and WRX. The Recaros may have had something to do with this - they have very thick backs... I didn’t try the standard seats, so I don’t know if they encroach as much. The cargo area in the FoST is also surprisingly small and compromised by the sloping glass. The GTI seems to fit more just due to the upright window, and the WRX truck is cavernous. Day-to-day the WRX probably holds more stuff save for the few times you need to carry something tall. Also, the rear seats flop down in the WRX very easily and you can fit 4 wheels and tires in there with them down.

Then how much is a car from a “ new car graveyard ” worth...?

Good to know - thanks for the info! I do love a hatchback which is where the current WRX fails me, but you’re absolutely right about the WRX’s trunk and back seat space. I can comfortably sit behind myself at 6' tall. Maybe I should reconsider that choice. We have my wife’s Ford Flex and a 5x9 trailer for tall stuff.
I am surprised the GTI isn’t being discounted more these days with Dieselgate and all. It’s completely unaffected, was a good car before, and is a good car today. Then again, I have a happy history with Subaru, since I own one now and would be swapping for another. They might want to help me with that.

I’m assuming you want something with a manual, but a Foz XT might be worth a look too if you can get over the CVT. You can swap WRX springs to lower it and throw a rear sway bar on to get something approximating a WRX wagon.

True, but that would end up costing more than a WRX or GTI the way I’d equip them. Plus we already have one SUV/crossover in the household - we don’t need a second.
